What is periodontics?
Periodontics is a chronic disease (the patient will always have it) that affects both the gum and the bone surrounding the tooth destroying them and ultimately causing tooth loss.
In our dental clinic in Alicante we are specialists in treating periodontics.
For whom is periodontal treatment indicated?
Periodontal treatment is indicated for all those patients who present any symptoms such as; bleeding gums, halitosis or bad breath, receding gums or teeth longer than normal, tooth mobility or tooth loss could present periodontal disease and would need to diagnose periodontal disease and treat it.
Before treating periodontal disease, it is of utmost importance to perform a study to determine the degree of affectation and to determine the beginning of the process and evaluate the evolution of the disease, since it is chronic and requires diagnosis, treatment and maintenance.
Since the disease has an important genetic component, it is also recommended that patients with family members who have periodontal disease be screened for it.
Likewise, those patients who are smokers, diabetics or have heart disease should also have a periodontal check-up because of the relationship between them and periodontal disease.
What are the benefits of this treatment?
Patients with treated periodontal disease and periodontal maintenance greatly increase the life expectancy of their teeth since the non-treatment of periodontal disease leads to long-term tooth loss. In the first instance the patient who is treated notices an improvement in their teeth and gums with a decrease or disappearance of bleeding gums and tooth mobility.
What is the duration of treatment?
After a periodontal study to diagnose the type of periodontal disease and its stage, the basic treatment of the whole mouth consisting of scaling and root planing or curettage can be performed in 1 or 2 sessions and after a month the case is reevaluated to perform a surgical treatment or go to a periodontal maintenance program, depending on its evolution. Due to the fact that the disease is chronic, the success of the periodontal patient lies in the long term maintenance of the same, that is why all periodontal patients should enter a periodontal maintenance program once they have been treated.
Will the treatment hurt? Does it require anesthesia?
Scaling or curettage treatment is performed under local anesthesia and is painless. Subsequent periodontal maintenance does not require local anesthesia.
How many days will I be inactive?
Basic periodontal treatment consisting of scaling or curettage does not require rest or time off work. Surgical treatment of periodontal diseases requires relative rest between 24-48 hours.
Are there any contraindications to this treatment?
There are no contraindications when treating periodontics, on the contrary, situations such as diabetes, heart disease, pregnancy, etc. Require an optimal state of oral health that avoids implications in different situations.
