Orthognathic surgery is a type of surgical intervention performed to correct possible dento-cranio-maxillofacial deformities.
The aim of orthognathic surgery (or cosmetic surgery of the facial skeleton) is to restore balance to the facial features of the patient with this problem.
When a patient comes to our maxillofacial clinic, we carry out an exhaustive analysis of the different elements and parts that make up the face, such as the jaw, teeth, maxilla, nose, zygomatic bones, as well as the soft tissues of the facial area.
Our maxillofacial team conceives aesthetics and functionality as a whole. In this way, both morphology and function are assessed together, achieving a harmonisation of the face at the cranio-maxillofacial level.
Orthognathic surgery + orthodontic treatment
Some cases of malocclusion or even malposition of teeth cannot be corrected by medical orthodontic treatment alone, as the problem has a skeletal basis, i.e. the problem is not only in the teeth but also in the bones that house them, such as maxillary hypoplasia, mandibular prognathism, etc. Therefore, they require a surgical intervention called orthognathic surgery to reposition the jaw and maxilla in a correct position so that, combined with orthodontic medical treatment, the expected result is obtained and patients can wear a perfect smile, with aligned teeth and a correctly positioned jaw.
There are different cases in which the intervention of the maxillofacial team is necessary to carry out surgery. Among the most common cases are open bite, facial asymmetry, class 2 surgery (mandibular retrognathia), class 3 surgery (mandibular prognathism), and gummy smile.
Therefore, this type of surgery (orthognathic surgery) is performed after a detailed study with the orthodontist team and the maxillofacial surgeon, carrying out various treatments with the aim of achieving the best result.
