My history with orthodontics began at the age of 13, when I started my orthodontic treatment with Dr. Orts Llinares. Joaquín, with his sympathy and hard work, awakened in me an interest in beautiful and aesthetic smiles, and it was then that I decided to dedicate myself to “the world of teeth” as an adult. Of course, my father, Dr. José Manuel Torres Hortelano, also knew how to transmit to me his passion for dentistry, dental occlusion and craniomandibular dysfunction!
My professional career began in Madrid, at the CEU San Pablo University, where I graduated in Dentistry. Once I finished my degree I decided to continue my studies in the USA, at the University of UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), where I completed a one-year postgraduate course in Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine under the direction of Dr. Bob Merril, to end up taking the American Board of Orofacial Pain exam and become the youngest Spanish graduate to pass this test.
After my studies in Los Angeles I understood that in order to address most of the problems that a patient with dental malocclusion may have, the orthodontist must have a broader vision of the masticatory system, looking beyond the dento-facial esthetics and expanding his knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of pain and/or dysfunction present in the masticatory musculature and Temporomandibular Joints (TMJs) present in many of these patients.
After finishing my experience at an American university, I decided to continue my postgraduate studies by completing a university master’s degree in orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics at the International University of Catalonia. It was a full-time, three-year master’s degree under the direction of Dr. Andreu Puigdollers, where I gained a broad knowledge of orthodontics and learned to approach treatments from a multidisciplinary perspective.
As a complement to what was being developed in the master’s degree, I became interested in the application of new CAD/CAM techniques in orthodontics, deciding to delve deeper into these digital techniques in Dallas-USA with a world pioneer in this field, Dr. Adiano Araujo.
I currently work full time at the Kranion Clinic in Alicante, as an orthodontist and expert in Orofacial Pain.
I love my job and dedicate a lot of time to it, although I always find the time to play sports, specifically basketball and I am a great follower of the NBA league.
