Dr. José Manuel Torres Hortelano is one of the founding partners of Clínica Kranion and directs the Orofacial Pain and Oral Sleep Medicine Unit of the clinic.
He studied Dentistry at the Complutense University of Madrid, specialized in Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) at the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid and did his doctorate at the University of Valencia researching the relationship between TMD and the combined treatment of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery.
He later furthered his studies in the area of Orofacial Pain at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine in New Jersey (USA), being one of the five Spaniards who have obtained the prestigious certification of the American Board of Orofacial Pain (ABOP).
When we talk about Orofacial Pain nowadays, we often still tend to relate it to Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) and dental occlusion alterations. However, it should not be forgotten that the dentist specialized in orofacial pain can also be of great help in the diagnosis and treatment of cranio-cervical myofascial pain, headaches, neuropathic pain in the cranio-cervico-mandibular area and sleep disorders such as snoring, apnea and bruxism.
From the bio-psycho-social perspective demanded by modern Pain Medicine, Clínica Kranion believes in tailor-made medicine, offering a varied and multidisciplinary treatment, individualized for each patient, and based on the re-education and modification of patient behavior, dento-maxillary orthopedics through the use of interdental splints, physiotherapy rehabilitation, the application of intra-articular and muscular infiltrations, pharmacotherapy and, in some cases, surgical treatment of the TMJ through arthrocentesis, arthroscopy or open surgery.
Currently Dr. Torres continues to innovate in the area of Orofacial Pain as Kranion Clinic is a national pioneer in research and application of new treatments in osteoarthrosis of the TMJ through autologous biological therapies with intra-articular infiltration of growth factors. Dr. Torres dedicates part of his time to the training of dentists in the field of Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Joint disorders in courses he teaches throughout the country, he is a national reference in the treatment of orofacial pain and Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ).
